SUKMA XXI Closing Ceremony

Laser lights, awe-inspiring choreographies, fireworks! These were among the highlights of the SUKMA Sarawak 2024 closing ceremony at the Indoor Stadium in Petra Jaya, Kuching, last night. No short of being extravagant, the ceremony celebrated not just the completion of the 21st edition of the Malaysia Games, or Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA for short), but also the fact that this year’s host, Sarawak, took up the challenge and finally emerged as the 2024 SUKMA champion!

The Indoor Stadium was filled with cheers from the crowd as the trophy was presented to the Sarawak contingent's Chef de Mission, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu, by the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, witnessed by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg; Deputy Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof; Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, Hannah Yeoh; and Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, as well as Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The closing ceremony also saw the naming of 20-year-old Andrew Goh Zheng Yin from Selangor (Swimming) as Best Male Athlete and 20-year-old Gan Chen Jie from Negeri Sembilan (Shooting) as Best Female Athlete.

Another highlight was the lowering of the SUKMA flag, which was then handed over to Selangor, the host state for the 22nd edition of the games in 2026.

Present to witness the momentous event last night were the Menteri Besar of Selangor, Dato’ Seri Amirudin bin Shari; Menteri Besar of Perlis, Mohd Shukri bin Ramli; Deputy Premiers of Sarawak; Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah; and State Secretary of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki, among other distinguished guests.

Meanwhile, outside the stadium, thousands of people gathered near the big screen next to the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Center to witness the closing ceremony while they awaited the big finish—the fireworks show that finally brought the SUKMA XXI games to a close.

SUKMA XXI Sarawak was indeed one for the history books, touted by many as the best SUKMA games ever held to date! Congratulations, Sarawak, on the successful hosting of this year’s SUKMA games, and indeed congratulations to the Sarawak contingent on being the champions of SUKMA XXI. What a feeling this is for all Sarawakians. Ooo haaa!

Sarawak Women's Indoor Volleyball Team Triumphes

The Sarawak Women's Indoor Volleyball team achieved a significant victory on August 23, 2024, by clinching the gold medal in the SUKMA XXI finals. Held at the Rejang Park Indoor Volleyball Stadium in Sibu, the match saw Sarawak triumph over Selangor in a thrilling 3-1 set victory.

Sarawak started off strong, winning the first two sets with scores of 25-15 and 25-16. Despite a comeback from Selangor in the third set with a 25-21 win, Sarawak remained composed and sealed their victory in the fourth set with a 25-18 finish.

The win was particularly emotional for assistant coach Angela Tan, who was part of the last Sarawak team to win gold in volleyball in 2013. The team's success was attributed to their intensive three-month training regime under the guidance of head coach Sanong Kulchin from Thailand. Team captain Moh Sheau Jun expressed deep gratitude for the strong local support, which was a rare but motivating experience for the team, who usually competes in other states with little supporters.

Officially launched The SUKMA XXI Sports Village

The SUKMA XXI Sports Village was officially launched earlier today on August 5, 2024 at the Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) by the Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The 21st Malaysia Games or better known as SUKMA Sarawak 2024 will take place across nine divisions in Sarawak, and the state government has prepared a total of 33 sports villages and accommodations for the athletes in Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri, with UNIMAS being the biggest one of them all.

“Many of the sports villages and accommodations have already been taken up by athletes and officials from as early as August 7, 2024. As such, we hope that the prepared accommodations are not only satisfactory but also comfortable for our delegates,” expressed Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development, Hajah Hairani binti Mohamad Ismail, who is also Deputy Chairman of the SUKMA XXI Sports Village and Accommodation of Officials and Athletes Committee during the launching.

“Of course, looking at the sheer number of facilities we have prepared in conjunction with the 21st edition of SUKMA, there are bound to be some shortcomings,” said Karim during his launching speech, expressing hope that action would be taken to ensure that all accommodations would be made pleasant for all visiting athletes.

Meanwhile, in a press conference held after the launching, Abdul Karim also touched on the ongoing progress of several facilities. According to him, the toilets located within Sarawak Archery and Shooting Range will not be ready in time, but mobile toilets will be prepared. He also added that the Hockey Stadium in Padungan has been completed as of last night (August 14, 2024) and the BMX Track located at Bukit Siol (DBKU) is now ready for use despite the lack of surrounding landscaping.

Abdul Karim also announced that incentives for SUKMA XXI medal-winning Sarawak athletes will be formally announced tomorrow, so stay tuned to find out!
