Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) has just issued its first-ever carbon licence. The official ceremony, held at FDS Headquarters in Kuching, marked a major step forward in the region’s efforts to address climate change. Director of Forests Sarawak, Datu Haji Hamden bin Haji Mohammad handed the licence to Franscois Blignaut of SaraCarbon Sdn Bhd in an event attended by key figures from FDS and senior representatives from Samling Group.
SaraCarbon Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Samling Group, has taken the lead in Sarawak’s forest carbon initiatives. The company, which received Sarawak’s first forest carbon study permit at the Asia Carbon Conference 2023, is now spearheading the Marudi Forest Conservation and Restoration Project in Miri. This groundbreaking project focusses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable forest management, which is a tangible step toward protecting the environment.
By adhering to global standards such as Verra, SaraCarbon aims to generate premium carbon credits for the international market. These efforts not only strengthen environmental conservation but also open new economic opportunities, aligning with Sarawak’s vision to integrate carbon trading into its economic landscape.
This milestone reflects Sarawak’s forward-thinking approach to climate action and showcases how innovative policies and practical solutions can create lasting impacts. As a leader in sustainability efforts, Sarawak is setting an example for the nation by balancing environmental stewardship with economic growth. SaraCarbon’s work highlights the importance of responsibly utilising natural resources to benefit both the environment and local communities, thus ensuring a better future for all.
