More flights between Malaysia, China in 2024
In a statement made by Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, China Eastern Airlines and its subsidiary, Shanghai Airlines are set to boost flight services between Malaysia and China, with a commitment to a minimum of 62 weekly flights.
According to the federal minister, plans for expanded operations include five additional departure locations (Beijing, Xi’an, Urumqi, Nanjing and Kunming) and three new destinations (Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Penang), with Xi’an and Urumqi as key hubs for the Chinese Muslim market.
Since visa exemptions for visits between Malaysia and China, there has been a surge of tourism, prompting follow-up measures by airlines, which include increasing flight frequencies and introducing new routes.
The China Eastern Airlines will also gradually launch daily flights from Shanghai Pudong Airport to new destinations in Malaysia in the second half of this year, which includes daily flights to Penang from July 24 and daily round-trip flights to Kuching in mid-September.
“If all goes according to schedule, these airlines will be operating 73 weekly flights from China to Malaysia, with a weekly capacity exceeding 10,000 individuals,” said Tiong in his statement.
